About this book
What songs carry a seeker past heaven’s guards and into the presence of the divine throne?
Hekhalot Rabbati, or The Greater Palaces, leads into the strange world of early Jewish mysticism. In its opening scene, Rabbi Ishmael asks which songs and practices allow a seeker to approach the vision of the chariot and return safely. According to the text, the way passes through heavenly halls, guarded doors, and terrible dangers.
Passages about ascent sit beside hymns of praise, as the text describes a mystic joining angels before God’s throne. With no known author and no single fixed version, this fragmentary work preserves teachings given in the names of earlier rabbis. Its visions draw on Ezekiel’s chariot and belong to the mystical tradition called Hekhalot and Merkavah literature.

The Loss of the Temple Sends Mystics Upward
Hekhalot Rabbati begins in a wounded world. In 70 CE the Romans destroyed the Second Temple, the place where heaven and earth were believed to touch. Priests, sacrifices and incense had kept the order of creation in place, or so people felt. When the building fell, many Jews asked where God could now be found.
The rabbis answered by rebuilding Jewish life around Torah, prayer and community. Another circle asked a bolder question. If the earthly sanctuary was gone, could a person enter the heavenly one? Their answer is called Merkabah mysticism, named for the chariot throne that the prophet Ezekiel saw. It taught that a prepared person could ascend through the heavens.

What is Hekhalot Rabbati about?
It describes how a prepared mystic could ascend through seven heavenly palaces to the divine throne. It gives the songs, names, seals and moral conditions for the journey, and joins them to tales of Rome and the Messiah.
What does Hekhalot mean?
Hekhalot is the Hebrew word for palaces or heavenly halls. Rabbati means greater, so the title is the Greater Palaces. It is set apart from a shorter sister text, the Lesser Palaces.
Who wrote Hekhalot Rabbati and when?
No author is known. The teachings are credited to sages such as Rabbi Ishmael and Rabbi Akiva, but scholars think the text grew over several centuries and disagree on its dates. It survives in medieval manuscripts.
