About this book
Where does evil begin—and what happens when the angels charged with watching the earth cross a forbidden line?
1 Enoch gathers Jewish writings under the name of Enoch, the figure who walks with God in Genesis. In its account, the Watchers leave heaven, take human women, and father giants who ravage the earth. Enoch carries their plea to heaven as the text confronts corruption, violence, and judgment.
Beyond the Watchers, this collection opens onto visions of the cosmos, a coming judge, and the movements of heavenly lights. Traditionally attributed to Enoch, it speaks through unnamed Jewish writers rather than a single known author. Its dreams, warnings, and journeys return to a searching question: will the evil that fills the earth ever receive an answer?

Angels swear an oath and take wives
The book opens with a blessing for the chosen who will live in a time of great trouble. Enoch says angels opened his eyes to a vision meant for a generation far ahead. The Holy One comes down to the earth, and mountains melt like wax. Yet the righteous receive peace, light and mercy.
First the text asks the reader to look at the sky and the land. The stars keep their paths. Summer and winter come in turn. Seas and rivers follow courses they never leave. Creation obeys. Only people have turned away and spoken proudly.

What is the Book of Enoch about?
It tells of Enoch's visions: angels who descend and father giants, his journeys through heaven and the ends of the earth, the Son of Man who judges kings, the stars and calendar, and dreams of history.
Who are the Watchers and the Nephilim?
The Watchers are angels who swear an oath on Mount Hermon and take human wives. Their giant children are linked to the Nephilim of Genesis. The book blames them for violence and forbidden teachings.
Why is the Book of Enoch not in most Bibles?
Jewish and most Christian communities did not include it in their canons, though some valued it. The Ethiopian Orthodox Church counts it as scripture, and the letter of Jude quotes a prophecy of Enoch.
