About this book
What happens when a troop of joking scouts takes its skills beyond the comforts of camp?
In Roy Blakeley's Bee-line Hike, Percy Keese Fitzhugh brings together outdoor adventure and boyhood humor. Roy and his fellow scouts head out on a hike that calls on what they learn in camp. The trail gives them room to test their skills, trade jokes and show how well they look after one another.
Roy tells the story himself, with wordplay, silly comparisons and plenty of teasing banter. Beneath the laughter lie the scout ideals of loyalty, helpfulness and fair play. The boys face the challenge of putting those ideals into practice, where knowing a knot or following a trail matters alongside keeping your good cheer.

A silly vow starts the bee-line hike
The story opens with a small loss. Charlie Seabury leaves the Silver Fox Patrol for the summer, and that leaves Roy Blakeley, the patrol leader, stuck with Pee-wee Harris, a small scout from the Raven Patrol.
Pee-wee arrives on Roy's porch looking like a walking junk shop. He announces that he is a delegation and has been trying to win a boy named Warde Hollister for the Foxes. Warde said he had something better to do.

What is Roy Blakeley's Bee-line Hike about?
It follows Roy Blakeley and the Silver Fox Patrol on a seven-mile hike straight west to a distant tree. They vow never to turn right or left, so houses, rivers and an old amusement park all become obstacles.
Who is Pee-wee Harris?
Pee-wee Harris is a small, loud scout from the Raven Patrol who is left with the Silver Foxes before camp. He carries pots, a compass and a phonograph horn, and he is always ready to eat and to argue.
What is a bee-line hike?
It is a hike in one straight line toward a distant landmark, here a tall tree. The scouts must go through, over or under whatever is in the way, checking their line with the distant tree or a compass.
