About this book
What if the romance you chase leads to a quiet inn where charm hides a deadly trap?
Richard Beckett travels towards Paris with money, good manners and little experience. A mysterious young Frenchwoman catches his eye, and love at first sight draws him onward. The courteous Marquis d'Harmonville offers guidance but keeps much to himself. Beckett wants romance and adventure; he has little sense of how easily others can turn those wishes against him.
His pursuit brings him to the Dragon Volant, a country inn that seems a comfortable stop. The conversation is pleasant, the wine is good, and the woman seems to favour him. Yet disguise and secret watchers surround his adventure. In Joseph Sheridan Le Fanu's short Gothic novel, no ghost is needed: the danger comes from people, and Beckett's trust leaves him exposed.

In short
What would you do for a woman whose face you have seen only once, in a mirror, for a few seconds? Richard Beckett, a rich young Englishman of twenty-three, answers that question the foolish way.
From the 15-minute summary · Key idea 1
A veiled lady stops a young man
The story opens in 1815. Napoleon has fallen, and English travelers pour into France. Richard Beckett, aged twenty-three and newly rich, rides by post from Brussels to Paris. His head is so full of the city to come that he notices almost nothing of the scenery.
Then he comes upon a carriage in trouble. Two horses lie flat in the road, and the servants struggle to raise them. Beckett jumps down to help. From the window come an old man in a black wig, his face wrapped in a muffler though the day is hot, and a young woman in a thick black veil. The lady thanks him in sweet, broken English. Beckett sees only black lace, and he curses it.
