About this book

What does it cost to become someone new when money, fashion, and other people's approval set the rules?

In Flappers and Philosophers, F. Scott Fitzgerald follows young Americans who want more than the lives laid out for them. In The Offshore Pirate, restless heiress Ardita Farnam meets an unusual pirate. In The Ice Palace, Sally Carrol Happer leaves Georgia for her fiancé's northern home and wonders where she belongs.

These eight stories move through a world of dances, restless hearts, and sharp social divisions after the First World War. Bernice Bobs Her Hair follows a shy visitor who longs for her cousin Marjorie Harvey's popularity. Head and Shoulders brings bookish Horace Tarbox into contact with lively dancer Marcia Meadow, while Benediction turns toward religion and family.
