About this book
What if the real adventure in Italy is questioning everything a traveler is supposed to admire?
In Italian Fantasies, Israel Zangwill explores Italy as a writer first and a tourist second. These travel essays follow a sharp, sympathetic observer who looks, thinks and jokes. Places matter, but so do the people who visit them—and the ideas they carry along.
This is no guidebook. Zangwill brings charm, irony and passion to an Italy where the past sits in the street. His attention moves between what he sees and what it makes him think. A joke may sit beside real emotion, while his questioning eye invites you to look beyond familiar admiration.

In short
What would it be like to cross the Alps with a head so full of dreams that Hannibal's baggage looks small? Israel Zangwill opens Italian Fantasies with exactly that picture.
From the 15-minute summary · Key idea 1
Beauty takes the long way round
Zangwill opens with a claim that the whole book keeps testing. Beauty begins with the curve, while science likes the straight line. He pictures the white road from Sorrento to Amalfi, winding around the hills and doubling back like a mountain duet. A crow flies straight, he jokes, and it is a dismal bird.
He turns the idea on language. Call a cloud cirrus and the angel's wing floating above Rimini fades. Psyche lights her lamp on Cupid and loses him. A name persuades us that we have grasped what cannot be grasped.

What is Italian Fantasies about?
It is a set of essays by Israel Zangwill on his travels through Italy. Each visit to a church, museum, tomb or town becomes an argument about faith, science, art, power or the way societies remember their past.
What does autocosm mean in Italian Fantasies?
Zangwill uses autocosm for the complete little world each creature, faith or age lives inside. It feels like the whole universe to its inhabitants and works well until outside facts press against it.
Is Italian Fantasies a true travel account?
It is based on real journeys through Naples, Assisi, Venice, Mantua, Sicily, Rimini and other places, and it began as magazine essays in 1903 and 1904. Zangwill mixes observation with dreams, jokes and argument.
