About this book

What if the one thing that keeps you hopeful is the thing your new family cannot understand?

Emily Byrd Starr sees beauty where others barely look. When her father dies, she must leave their life together for New Moon, an old farmhouse on Prince Edward Island. There, among the proud Murray relatives, her fierce wish to write meets rules, doubt and Aunt Elizabeth’s stern ideas about what matters.

In L. M. Montgomery’s coming-of-age novel, Emily fills notebooks with stories, poems and the words she cannot say aloud. Aunt Laura offers quiet affection, Cousin Jimmy understands her love of verse, and Ilse, Teddy and Perry bring friendship. Through grief, rejection and stubborn hope, Emily struggles to keep her gift alive.

A child who sees what others miss

The story begins in a small house on Prince Edward Island, where Emily lives with her father, Douglas Starr. Her mother has died, and her father is ill with consumption, which we now call tuberculosis. Emily is ten years old, and she is not like other children. She notices the way light falls on a field, the sound of the wind in the trees, and she feels that the world is full of secret beauty.
