About this book

What makes a childhood linger: the games, the quarrels, or the girl whose stories hold everyone spellbound?

On Prince Edward Island, the King family farm becomes a whole world of fields, lanes and orchards. Sara Stanley, known as the Story Girl, lives among her cousins and draws them close with her tales. Around her, children play, make plans, argue and sometimes find their way into trouble.

Beverley King tells the story as a grown man, looking back fondly on those country days with his brother Felix, their cousins and their neighbours. L. M. Montgomery builds this novel from small adventures rather than a racing plot. What matters is friendship, imagination and the question of why ordinary moments stay with us.

What is The Story Girl about?

It follows brothers Beverley and Felix King, who spend a season on their father's family farm on Prince Edward Island. With their cousins, a hired boy and the storyteller Sara Stanley, they play, quarrel, pray and tell tales.

Why is she called the Story Girl?

Sara Stanley is called the Story Girl because she tells tales so well, and because another girl nearby is also named Sara. She prefers the nickname to her own name.

Is The Story Girl a true story?

It is fiction, written by L. M. Montgomery and set on a farm in Prince Edward Island in a time of horses, lamps and orchards. The family, its customs and its tales feel real, but the characters are invented.
