About this book
What can a cook’s marriage reveal about the people who share her home?
In The Cook's Wedding and Other Stories, Anton Pavlovich Chekhov brings families, servants, clerks and country people into view. The title story centers on a household and a cook’s marriage. Elsewhere, kitchens, country roads, drawing rooms and village shops become places where ordinary lives open onto larger questions. What people leave unsaid matters as much as what they say.
These short stories take you into Russia’s modest, crowded households in the last decades of the nineteenth century. Chekhov watches with a calm smile, letting gentle irony reveal the distance between what people believe and what a reader can see. The pace is quiet. The pleasure lies in noticing a small exchange, a shared space, or a silence.

From the 15-minute summary · Key idea 1
A child watches a marriage arranged over tea
The title story is told through Grisha, a boy of seven. He sees a match being made in the family kitchen and cannot understand it. The nurse has brought a cabman named Danilo Semyonitch to meet Pelageya, the cook. The grown-ups treat it as business, while the child treats it as a mystery.
The cabman is careful and proud. He refuses vodka and mentions his earnings with a sideways glance at Pelageya. She drops plates, oversalts the dinner and swears she will never marry him. Grisha decides marriage must be shameful, and he dreams that a witch carries her off.

What is The Cook's Wedding and Other Stories about?
It is a collection of twenty-five short stories by Anton Chekhov about servants, children, clerks, officials and animals in nineteenth-century Russia. The tales mix comedy, sadness and sharp observation of everyday life, from a cook's arranged marriage to a police inquiry.
Which stories are in this collection?
Besides the title story, it includes Sleepy, Children, The Runaway, Grisha, Oysters, Home, Vanka, Kashtanka, A Chameleon, The Fish, Art, Whitebrow and The Swedish Match, among others. Each story stands on its own and can be read in a short sitting.
Is The Cook's Wedding a true story?
The stories are fiction, but they draw on the real world of Russia in the late nineteenth century. Chekhov, who trained as a doctor, wrote them in the years before his death in 1904, and they show daily life with close, accurate detail.
