About this book
What happens when a small lie feels easy, but kindness asks more of you?
In Lucy Maud Montgomery Short Stories, 1896 to 1901, L. M. Montgomery brings you into farms, villages, church suppers and school days. These early tales follow young and older people through ordinary choices, where honesty meets pride and a generous act can reach someone who feels overlooked.
The collection explores small-town life, the pull of an easy lie and the warmth of unexpected kindness. Lonely, odd and proud characters give these concerns a human face. Read together, the stories also reveal a young writer finding the warm, watchful voice that readers of Anne of Green Gables come to know.

A Boy Confesses a Crime Nobody Noticed
The collection opens with A Case of Trespass. Dan Phillips is a freckled boy of thirteen who fishes for trout in Carleton Pond all summer and sells his catch at the big hotels. His father is dead, his mother works without rest, and his sister Ella May lies ill.
One noon Dan unfolds an old newspaper and finds a notice from H. C. Walters, the new owner of the pond. Anyone fishing there will be prosecuted. Dan never saw it. His mother tells him to go to Mr. Walters and say everything.

What is Lucy Maud Montgomery Short Stories 1896 to 1901 about?
It gathers twenty early short stories about honesty, kindness, pride and love. They include Christmas tales, school stories, village romances and a few darker pieces with ghosts and storms, each short enough to read in one sitting.
Is this the same as Anne of Green Gables?
No. Anne of Green Gables is a novel, while this is a collection of separate short stories by the same author. They share Montgomery's warm humor, her gift for describing the seasons and the sea, and her interest in village life.
When were these stories written?
The title gives the period from 1896 to 1901. Montgomery wrote them as a young woman, when she was selling tales to magazines, and they show her trying out plots, voices and settings that she later used in her novels.
