About this book
What happens when Mark Twain stops putting his life in order and follows whatever catches his mind?
In Chapters from My Autobiography, Mark Twain turns memory into conversation. He begins wherever he pleases, moving through childhood, family, money, grief and opinions. There is no tidy march through dates. Instead, a born storyteller jokes, wanders, settles scores and sometimes drops the laughter to tell you something painful.
His memories lead to Hannibal on the Mississippi, summers on a Missouri farm and the Hartford household he shares with Olivia Langdon, whom he calls Livy. Alongside these warm scenes come business ventures and heavy losses. Throughout, Twain's timing and understatement bring comedy close to sorrow, without forcing either into a neat life story.
What you’ll discover

In short
Why would a famous author hand his life to a stenographer and ask for no order at all? Mark Twain did just that.
From the 15-minute summary · Key idea 1
Follow Whatever Interests You, Then Drop It
Twain opens with a plan that sounds like no plan at all. He will talk about whatever interests him at the moment and drop it the instant the interest fades. He insists the system only looks systemless.
He argues against the usual memoir. Most autobiographers hunt for the days they met celebrities, yet their meetings with ordinary people were far more numerous and just as interesting. He wants the past and the present to face each other, the way flint strikes steel. His friend John Hay tells him that anyone who writes about himself paints a portrait without meaning to.
