About this book
What if the greatest discovery beneath Antarctic ice is something no scientist should disturb?
William Dyer wants to stop an expedition. A geologist at Miskatonic University, he knows what a journey into Antarctica can cost. In H. P. Lovecraft’s At the Mountains of Madness, he sets down his warning: a drilling mission, a strange find beneath the ice, and discoveries that leave him afraid of what other scientists might uncover.
Away from the main base, the biologist Lake leads a party into ancient rock and finds strange specimens. Then a fierce storm rises, and the radio falls silent. Dyer and the pilot Danforth must seek answers beyond the camp. Science guides their search, but each reasonable step brings them closer to something that threatens Dyer’s peace of mind.

From the 15-minute summary · Key idea 1
A geologist speaks to stop another expedition
The story is a warning. Dyer, a geologist at Miskatonic University, speaks against his own wishes. A new group, the Starkweather-Moore Expedition, plans a huge fossil hunt in Antarctica, with deep drilling and the melting of ancient ice. Dyer wants it stopped, though he fears his warning may be in vain.
He expects to be doubted. His photographs may be called fakes, and his drawings may be mocked as forgeries. So he appeals to a few scientific leaders who are open enough to weigh the evidence.

It follows a Miskatonic University expedition to Antarctica. A strange fossil mark leads to a mountain range, a cave and a lost ancient city, and the narrator, Dyer, tells the story to warn others against following.
Who are the Old Ones in At the Mountains of Madness?
The Old Ones are the barrel-shaped, starfish-headed beings the expedition finds as fossils. According to the carvings, they came from the stars, built great cities and shaped life on Earth millions of years before humans.
What does the title At the Mountains of Madness mean?
It names the great Antarctic range that hides the ancient city. Dyer calls the peaks mountains of madness because of what lies beyond them and the effect it has on the minds of those who look.
