Zadig, Chapter 15 summary

Chapter 15 of 18 · 14 min to read the chapter

In Chapter 15, Zadig finds Astarte among Ogul’s slaves, hears how she reaches captivity, and obtains her freedom by promising to cure her master. He restores Ogul through exercise and moderation rather than a basilisk, but the threatened physician organizes a plot against him as a courier arrives from Astarte.

What happens

  1. Zadig encounters women seeking a basilisk for Ogul, then recognizes Astarte as she writes his name beside a stream.
  2. Astarte describes her rescue from Moabdar, concealment inside a statue, and the civil conflict that ends in his death.
  3. She recounts captivity under the Prince of Hyrcania, escape with Missouf’s help, and sale into Ogul’s household through Arbogad and merchants.
  4. Zadig promises Ogul a cure in exchange for Astarte’s freedom, and she departs for Babylon.
  5. Daily football and restrained living restore Ogul’s health, and Zadig reveals that basilisks do not exist.
  6. The chief physician gathers supporters to plot against Zadig, who receives a courier from Astarte.

What to notice

The revelation exposes the false basis of the prescribed remedy. Ogul’s recovery comes from changed habits rather than a rare creature.
