Villette, Chapter 31: riassunto

Chapter 31 di 42 · 17 min per leggere: chapter

In Chapter 31, Lucy Snowe plans a school of her own, accepts that Dr. John’s kindness is not personal love, and discovers M. Paul’s secret watch over the garden. Their argument about spying becomes a confession of shared supernatural experiences, interrupted when the nun appears before them both.

Cosa succede

  1. Exhausted after church, Lucy sleeps at her desk and wakes to find someone has cushioned and covered her with shawls.
  2. In the garden, she plans an independent school and acknowledges that Dr. John’s warmth does not belong especially to her.
  3. M. Paul reveals his care for her and explains how he secretly observes the garden from a rented room.
  4. Lucy condemns his spying, while he describes watching St. Pierre, the pupils, Madame Beck, and Lucy herself.
  5. Paul declares an affinity with Lucy, and both admit seeing a figure dressed as a nun.
  6. After a tree shakes strangely and the prayer bell rings, the nun rushes past them as rain pours down.
