Villette, Chapter 10: riassunto

Chapter 10 di 42 · 12 min per leggere: chapter

In Chapter 10, Fifine breaks her arm, bringing Dr. John into Madame Beck’s household, where his visits continue through Désirée’s pretended illness. The narrator recognizes him as the man who previously helped her, studies his unexplained attachment to the school, and refuses to explain a startled look that he notices.

Cosa succede

  1. Madame Beck watches her children carefully but shows little tenderness, and her supervision fails to correct Désirée’s stealing and lying.
  2. Fifine falls down stone steps, breaks her arm, and receives treatment from a substitute doctor whom Madame helps with steady hands.
  3. The narrator recognizes the doctor as the Englishman who helps her with her trunk and guides her through a rainy park.
  4. Dr. Pillule’s prolonged absence allows Dr. John to continue visiting, and Désirée’s false illness supplies another reason after Fifine recovers.
  5. The narrator studies Dr. John’s unexplained interest in the household while he largely ignores her presence.
  6. A sudden idea makes the narrator stare; Dr. John catches her reflection and challenges her, but she remains silent.
