Vanity Fair, Chapter 7: riassunto

Chapter 7 di 68 · 13 min per leggere: chapter

In Chapter 7, Rebecca Sharp joins Sir Pitt Crawley in London and discovers that her titled employer is shabby, coarse, miserly, and absorbed in lawsuits rather than the grand gentleman she imagines. After an uncomfortable night with Mrs. Tinker, she leaves by coach, considering her prospects in the Crawley household.

Cosa succede

  1. The narrator introduces the Crawley family, its parliamentary connections, and Rebecca’s employment as governess to Sir Pitt’s two daughters.
  2. Rebecca arrives at the gloomy London house and mistakes the poorly dressed Sir Pitt for a servant.
  3. Sir Pitt demands small change from Mrs. Tinker, shares a cheap supper with her, and discusses his lawsuits.
  4. He suggests that Rebecca can help with his papers and orders her to share Mrs. Tinker’s bed.
  5. Rebecca explores the bedroom, unsuccessfully seeks family gossip, and lies awake considering her prospects.
  6. The next morning, Sir Pitt refuses the cab driver a tip, and Rebecca joins the departing stagecoach.

Cosa notare

Sir Pitt presents his penny-saving as a principle of fairness. Mrs. Tinker’s complaints and his conduct expose how little generosity accompanies that claim.
