Chapter 32 di 68 · 27 min per leggere: chapter

In Chapter 32, Jos buys Rebecca Crawley’s horses and flees Brussels, while Amelia stays with Mrs. O’Dowd to nurse a wounded officer and await news of George. The English repel the final French assault, but the closing scene reveals George dead while Amelia still prays for his safety.

Cosa succede

  1. Panic spreads through Brussels, and a fleeing Belgian soldier’s false account makes Jos desperate to escape.
  2. Rebecca refuses Lady Bareacres her horses, then sells both to Jos at an enormous price.
  3. Official news of success at Quatre Bras delays Jos, and wounded Tom Stubble brings reassurance about the women’s husbands.
  4. Amelia helps nurse Stubble, while Rebecca hides her valuables and considers how to secure her own independence.
  5. Sunday’s cannon fire drives Jos to leave with Isidor after Amelia refuses to abandon her husband.
  6. The English drive back the Imperial Guard, but George lies dead while Amelia prays for him.

Cosa notare
