Utopia, Part 3: riassunto

Part 3 di 9 · 2 min per leggere: part

In Of Their Magistrates, families elect local officials, and those officials choose a Prince through a secret vote, while strict council rules limit government power. Important questions pass through public consultation and repeated debate, with delays designed to prevent hasty commitments and protect the common good.

Cosa succede

  1. Thirty families elect a Philarch each year, and each group of ten Syphogrants comes under an Archphilarch.
  2. Two hundred Syphogrants secretly elect the Prince from four publicly nominated candidates after swearing to choose the best person.
  3. The Prince serves for life unless removed on suspicion of seeking to enslave the people; other magistrates face annual elections.
  4. Tranibors consult the Prince every third day, while two Syphogrants attend the council and change daily.
  5. Public decisions require debate on three separate days, and unauthorized meetings about state affairs carry a death penalty.
  6. Major questions receive wider consultation, and discussion waits until another meeting to discourage rashness and defensive pride.
