The plot in six lines

After a shipwreck leaves her in Illyria, Viola disguises herself as Cesario, enters Duke Orsino's service and falls in love with him.

Orsino sends Cesario to speak of his love for Olivia, but Olivia falls for the messenger instead, leaving Viola caught between them.

Maria writes a letter that tricks Malvolio into believing Olivia loves him, and his strange behaviour makes Olivia think he has gone mad.

Sebastian survives the shipwreck with Antonio's help, while Sir Toby Belch pushes the frightened Sir Andrew and Cesario towards a duel.

Antonio mistakes Cesario for Sebastian and tries to protect him, but his arrest and accusations give Viola fresh hope that her brother lives.

Viola and Sebastian reunite, Orsino turns his love towards Viola, Olivia is married to Sebastian, and Malvolio discovers the trick and leaves promising revenge, while Feste closes with a song.

Themes

Love: Viola's patient love contrasts with Orsino's love of his own feelings and Olivia's sudden attraction to Cesario.

Appearance and reality: Viola's disguise hides her identity but also allows her to express real feelings that others misunderstand.

Class and ambition: Malvolio's wish to rise in rank makes him vulnerable to a letter that promises Olivia's love.

Laughter and cruelty: The trick against Malvolio invites laughter but also shows how a practical joke can cause real hurt.

Time and loss: Feste's songs connect love with passing time, giving the comedy moments where laughter and loss sit together.
