Treasure Island, Chapter 32 summary

Chapter 32 of 34 · Part 6: Captain Silver · 9 min to read the chapter

In Chapter 32, a voice among the trees frightens the pirates, but Silver restores their courage when they identify it as Ben Gunn’s rather than Flint’s. They resume the treasure hunt with growing greed, only to discover an old excavation where the expected seven hundred thousand pounds are already gone.

What happens

  1. The party rests on the plateau while Silver checks the bearings and the pirates nervously discuss Flint.
  2. A hidden voice sings and calls for Darby M’Graw, convincing the pirates that Flint’s spirit is nearby.
  3. Silver questions whether a spirit can produce an echo, and the men regain courage after recognizing Ben Gunn’s voice.
  4. The party resumes its search, while Dick grows feverish and clings to his Bible.
  5. As they approach the third tall tree, greed overtakes fear, and Silver treats the narrator with increasing violence.
  6. The hunters reach an old pit containing broken tools and packing boards, but the treasure is gone.

What to notice

The empty pit overturns the hunters’ expectation of immediate wealth. Their fear gives way to greed, only for the object of that greed to disappear.

Quick check

What helps Silver persuade the pirates that the voice need not belong to a spirit?
