In Chapter 24, the narrator struggles to guide a coracle toward land, then pursues the apparently unsteered Hispaniola in search of water and a chance to recover the ship. When the schooner bears down on him, he leaps onto its rigging, and its collision with the coracle leaves him without a way back.
What happens
- The narrator wakes offshore and rejects landing among dangerous cliffs, breaking waves, and frightening sea lions.
- He lets the current carry him north and learns to paddle gently without upsetting the coracle.
- He misses Cape of the Woods and suffers increasing thirst before spotting the Hispaniola.
- The schooner's erratic movements suggest nobody is steering, encouraging him to pursue it for water and possible recovery.
- After a difficult chase, the schooner approaches him, and he leaps onto its rigging just before it strikes the coracle.
