This Side of Paradise, Chapter 4: riassunto

Chapter 4 di 11 · 43 min per leggere: chapter

In Chapter 4, Amory forms a close friendship with Burne Holiday, whose campaign against Princeton’s clubs and serious intellectual searching expose the limits of Amory’s own development. As Amory enjoys college again, experiments with eccentricity, and remembers Isabelle through poetry, Monsignor directs him toward Clara Page, whose cheerful strength surprises him.

Cosa succede

  1. Tom reports a movement against the clubs, and Burne’s arguments and reading awaken Amory’s interest in serious intellectual growth.
  2. Amory recalls Burne’s practical jokes, while about a hundred students resign from clubs and Burne faces ridicule.
  3. Burne and Amory discuss appearance, fear, and morality, but disagree over whether strong, sane criminals exist.
  4. Burne gives up his class office, and Amory defends his growing independence against campus criticism.
  5. A play reminds Amory of Isabelle, while college friendships and an eccentric public manner renew his enjoyment of life.
  6. At Monsignor’s request, Amory visits Clara Page and finds a cheerful, resourceful widow rather than the misery he imagines.
