Who Amory Blaine is

Amory grows up in the American Midwest, surrounded by money and encouraged to think highly of himself. His mother, Beatrice Blaine, teaches him confidence, charm, and a taste for drama, but gives him little discipline. At boarding school, he discovers that other boys do not automatically share his belief in his own importance.

What Amory Blaine wants

Amory wants admiration and greatness, though he cannot yet say what he hopes to achieve. At Princeton, he studies the clubs, friendships, and habits that give other young men social standing. He also reads widely and tries writing poetry, building his mind while worrying about his reputation.

How Amory Blaine changes

School and college begin to test Amory's confidence by showing him the limits of charm. His neglected studies cost him a position he wants, and social success begins to seem less satisfying. He remains drawn to appearances, but starts to question whether admiration can give his life direction.

Amory Blaine and the others in the story

Monsignor Thayer Darcy, a Catholic priest and family friend, offers Amory warmth and guidance without flattering his vanity. His Princeton friends also suggest different paths, from Tom D'Invilliers's love of poetry to Burne Holiday's concern with conscience.
