The Time Machine, Chapter 13: riassunto

Chapter 13 di 17 · 5 min per leggere: chapter

In Chapter 13, the narrator reflects on humanity’s decline, rests, and finds his Time Machine inside the open pedestal of the White Sphinx. He knowingly enters the Morlocks’ trap, but his matches fail, forcing him to fight in darkness before fitting a lever and escaping their grip.

Cosa succede

  1. The narrator returns to a familiar seat, grieves for Weena, and questions his first confident judgments about this world.
  2. He suggests that lasting comfort weakens intelligence, while necessity gives the people underground greater initiative.
  3. He sleeps until shortly before sunset, then approaches the White Sphinx carrying a crowbar and matches.
  4. The bronze panels stand open, revealing the Time Machine; he discards his bar and enters, recognizing a trap.
  5. The panels close, and he discovers that his matches require their box to light.
  6. He fights the Morlocks for his levers, fits one, and pulls it, escaping their hands into gray light and tumult.
