Che cos’è questo libro
What would you do if the only way to save your queen were to ride in the cart that carries criminals to the gallows? Sir Launcelot of the Lake chooses the cart, and the whole countryside laughs at him. That scene stands near the start of The Story of Sir Launcelot and His Companions, the third of Howard Pyle's four books on King Arthur and his knights.
Pyle, an American author and illustrator, retells the old legends in a warm, picture-filled style. You follow Launcelot through a rescue, a dragon called the Worm of Corbin, a great tournament at Astolat and a madness in the forest. Between them come the tales of Sir Gareth, who hides his birth behind the name Beaumains, and Sir Ewaine, who wins a lady beside an enchanted fountain.

A May morning ends in capture
The book opens on a bright May morning near Camelot. Queen Guinevere rides out with ten Knights of the Round Table and their ladies to gather blossoms by the river. Everyone wears green, and at noon the party rests in a flowery meadow. Servants lay out venison pasties and wine, and minstrels sing.
Then a bugle sounds from the woods. Sir Mellegrans, son of King Bagdemagus, rides out with more than eighty armed men. He carries an old grudge against King Arthur and means to take the Queen as a hostage until the King makes amends.
The ten knights have no armor, yet they draw their swords and fight until seven fall wounded. Only three still stand back to back. Guinevere ends the fight herself, offering to go as a prisoner if her knights are spared. Courage can hold a line for a time, but only mercy can end a fight that cannot be won.
That’s 1 of 11 key points.

Questions about La storia di Sir Lancillotto e dei suoi compagni
What is The Story of Sir Launcelot and His Companions about?
It follows Sir Launcelot through rescues, a dragon fight, a tournament, madness and love, with tales of Sir Gareth and Sir Ewaine along the way. It leads up to the birth of Galahad, who is foretold to achieve the Holy Grail.
Who is Elaine the Fair in the story?
She is the daughter of King Pelles of Corbin. She loves Sir Launcelot, helps him in battle with her sleeve and cares for him in his illness. She is also the mother of Galahad.
Why does Launcelot ride in a cart?
His horse is shot by archers on his way to save Queen Guinevere. A firewood cutter's cart is the only help he can find, and a cart is normally for lawbreakers. Launcelot says honor comes from purpose, not from the way a man travels.
Is this a true story, and when was it written?
No, it is a retelling of legends, not history. Howard Pyle, who died in 1911, wrote it in the early twentieth century as the third of four books about King Arthur and the Round Table.
