The Republic, Book 4: riassunto

Book 4 di 10 · 44 min per leggere: book

In Book 4, Socrates answers Adeimantus by placing the city's happiness above any class's comfort and defending education, unity, and limits on wealth. With Glaucon, he locates wisdom in rulers, courage in soldiers, temperance in shared agreement about rule, and justice in each person doing their proper work.

Cosa succede

  1. Adeimantus questions the guardians' happiness, and Socrates defends arrangements that benefit the entire city rather than one class.
  2. Socrates argues that wealth and poverty damage work, while military training and alliances can protect a city without riches.
  3. He makes unity the limit on growth and treats education, stable musical practices, and orderly play as foundations of civic order.
  4. He rejects endless detailed legislation as ineffective without sound foundations and assigns religious regulations to Apollo.
  5. With Glaucon, Socrates identifies wisdom with governing knowledge, courage with preserving educated convictions, and temperance with agreement about authority.
  6. Socrates identifies justice as each person performing the work suited to their nature without interfering with others.

Cosa notare

Socrates connects justice to the founding rule that each person performs work suited to their nature. The search returns to a principle already governing the city's organization.
