You will love this book if you enjoy heroic quests, stories inside stories, gods and demons, and plain questions about loyalty and duty.

Che cos’è questo libro

What would you do if a promise made in love cost you everything? Rama, the eldest prince of Ayodhya, faces that question on the morning he expects to be crowned. Instead of a throne he is given fourteen years in the forest, and he accepts the sentence without a word of anger.

The Ramayan is an ancient Indian epic poem, credited to the sage and poet Valmiki. It tells of Rama, a prince who is also the god Vishnu born as a man, of his wife Sita, and of Ravan, the ten-headed king of Lanka who carries Sita away. Here you get the sweep of the story, with a scene and a takeaway in each part.

A poet's grief gives the epic its verse

The poem opens with a question. The sage Valmiki asks the wandering seer Narad who in the world is virtuous, brave, truthful and kind. Narad answers with one name, Rama of the house of Ikshvaku.

Then comes the story of how the poem itself is born. Valmiki is walking near a river when he watches a fowler shoot one of a pair of curlews. The mate cries out in anguish, and the poet feels such pity that words burst from him in an even, measured rhythm. He names it a sloka, a word that echoes the Sanskrit for sorrow.

The god Brahma tells Valmiki to use that rhythm to tell the whole life of Rama. Valmiki teaches the poem to the twins Kusa and Lava, who sing it to hermits, to cities, and at last before Rama himself.

Pity for a wounded bird gives the poet his voice, and compassion stays the pulse of the epic.

That’s 1 of 10 key points.
