Che cos’è questo libro
Can a man be so sure he is saved that nothing he does can count against him? That is the question at the heart of this novel. Robert Wringhim is told by his minister that he is among the elect. Soon a stranger who wears his face offers to help him act on that belief.
The Private Memoirs and Confessions of a Justified Sinner was written by James Hogg, a Scottish shepherd turned writer, and published in 1824. Hogg tells the same events twice, first through a calm editor and then through the sinner's own confession, found in a grave. You get a murder, a family torn in two, and a companion who may be a devil or a delusion.

A wedding night splits Dalcastle in two
The editor opens with the Colwan family, lairds of Dalcastle. The laird, George Colwan, is an older man who loves drink, dancing, and company. He marries Rabina Orde, a young woman from Glasgow, and the two could hardly be more unlike. The marriage fails on the very first night.
His bride has soaked up the teaching of the Reverend Robert Wringhim, a preacher of strict predestination, the belief that God chose who is saved before the world began. At the wedding feast she refuses to dance and speaks only with her minister. When the laird wants his bed instead of prayers, she lectures him until he falls asleep and snores through her devotions.
Within months the couple agree to a separation. She sends for Wringhim to scold the laird over his friend Miss Logan, and the laird calls the minister a cankerworm in the heart of the church. In private Wringhim tells the lady that to the just everything is just. She answers with delight that a justified person can do no wrong. That idea will drive the whole book.
Two sons are born. George is raised by his father. Robert is raised by the minister. A marriage where faith becomes a weapon leaves a child as its prize.
That’s 1 of 8 key points.

Questions about Le confessioni di un peccatore giustificato
What is The Private Memoirs and Confessions of a Justified Sinner about?
It follows Robert Wringhim, a young Scot raised to believe he is among God's chosen. A stranger called Gil-Martin, who shares his face, encourages him to treat that belief as permission to act, and violence follows.
Who is Gil-Martin in the novel?
Gil-Martin is a charming companion who can copy anyone's face and seems to read thoughts. Robert thinks he is a foreign prince, but the book leaves open whether he is a devil, a delusion, or Robert's second self.
What does justified sinner mean?
In the creed Robert follows, justified means chosen by God for salvation before birth. If that choice can never be undone, Robert reasons, nothing he does can count as sin. The title points to that dangerous idea.
Is the novel based on a true story and when was it written?
It is fiction, published anonymously in 1824 and set around 1700. Hogg frames it as a found manuscript and mixes real places, such as Edinburgh's Arthur's Seat, with local tradition and legend.
What is the main message of the book?
The book warns that absolute certainty about your own goodness can blind you to harm. Hogg shows how flattery, pride, and a rigid creed can lead a person to justify almost anything.
