A chi è rivolto

This is for readers who enjoy a novel of ideas, who like Edwardian London and Westminster, and who want to see big political dreams collide with private love.

Che cos’è questo libro

What does a man do when the career he spent his life building is gone for good? Richard Remington sits at a stone table beside a small house among the vines above the Ligurian coast. He is forty-two, an exile, and his seat in Parliament has vanished.

The New Machiavelli was written by H. G. Wells and published in 1911. Remington first tries to copy Niccolo Machiavelli, burns that attempt in a fire of olive twigs, and writes the honest story of his own life. You follow a marriage, a seat in Parliament, and a love that London's rules cannot hold.

Punto chiave 1 di 10

A statesman writes his life from exile

Remington, at forty-two, lives in Italy among vines and stone pines. His first attempts at writing fail because they copy Machiavelli too closely. One night he burns the pages in a small fire of olive twigs, and the next morning he begins again.

He admires Machiavelli for his mixed nature. At San Casciano, Machiavelli spent his days among gossips in a disreputable shop, and in the evening he put on court dress and wrote about princes. Remington sees the same split in himself, a lofty dream of statecraft beside a body full of ordinary appetite.

The modern world differs. No single prince remains to advise, so his book speaks to the constructive passion in any reader. Women have also entered the statesman's study, and love at last ruined a career planned without them.

A life told honestly can teach what a treatise cannot.

Questions about Il nuovo Machiavelli

What is The New Machiavelli about?

It tells the life of Richard Remington, a gifted politician who dreams of building an orderly, educated state. The story follows his boyhood, his marriage, his rise in Parliament, and the love that threatens everything he has built.

Why is the novel called The New Machiavelli?

Remington compares himself to Niccolo Machiavelli, who wrote The Prince after losing his place in politics. He wants a modern version, aimed not at a single prince but at all constructive minds, and that includes the role of love and women.

Is The New Machiavelli based on a true story?

It is a novel, published in 1911, though it draws on real people and politics of the time. Wells knew the Fabian circle, and readers have long linked characters like the Baileys to real figures.

Who are Margaret and Isabel in the book?

Margaret is Remington's wife, a gentle, cultivated woman who shares his early political work. Isabel Rivers is a brilliant younger writer who becomes his intellectual partner and the love that reshapes his life.

What is the main message of The New Machiavelli?

Wells argues that lasting progress comes from education, research, and fine thinking working beneath party politics. He also holds that a state cannot ignore love, women, and family, and that private life shapes public purpose.
