A chi è rivolto

Readers drawn to ancient history, mythology, religion, and Egyptian ideas about death, justice, and the gods will love this book. It also suits lovers of tales and poetry.

Che cos’è questo libro

What would you pack for a journey that never ends? The ancient Egyptians had a clear answer: words. Spells, hymns, and long lists of wrongs never done were written on coffins and papyrus and buried with the dead.

The Literature of the Ancient Egyptians was written by E. A. Wallis Budge of the British Museum, who finished it in April 1914. He meant it as a first introduction for ordinary readers. He gathers examples from tombs, papyri, and stone slabs across about four thousand years. You will meet a king who eats the gods, magicians who part a lake, a peasant who pleads nine times for justice, and a golden serpent on a vanishing island.

Thoth gave Egypt writing and wisdom

The Egyptians credited writing to a god. His name was Thoth, and he appears as a man with the head of an ibis. They saw him as the mind and wisdom of the God who made heaven and earth, so they held hieroglyphs to be holy.

Thoth also devised mathematics, arranged the seasons, and set the paths of the stars, moon, and sun. He served as clerk to the gods and kept the record of human deeds.

His greatest role was judge of the dead. In an old legend, Set accuses his twin brother Osiris of crimes. Thoth weighs the evidence, proves Set a liar, and clears Osiris. Every Egyptian prayed that Thoth would do the same when his own heart was weighed. In Egypt, writing was a divine gift and a form of power.

That’s 1 of 11 key points.
