The Importance of Being Earnest, Part 5: riassunto

Part 5 di 3 · 19 min per leggere: part

In Third Act Scene, Jack and Algernon reconcile with Gwendolen and Cecily, but Lady Bracknell’s objections and Jack’s refusal of consent block the marriages. Miss Prism’s account of a misplaced baby identifies Jack as Algernon’s older brother, and a military directory establishes that his first name really is Ernest.

Cosa succede

  1. Gwendolen and Cecily accept the men’s explanations and forgive them when both promise to undergo christening.
  2. Lady Bracknell arrives, rejects Jack’s engagement, and approves Cecily as Algernon’s bride after learning about her fortune.
  3. Jack withholds permission for Cecily’s marriage unless Lady Bracknell accepts his own engagement, leaving both couples blocked.
  4. Dr. Chasuble mentions Miss Prism, whom Lady Bracknell questions about a baby lost twenty-eight years ago.
  5. Miss Prism identifies Jack’s handbag, and Lady Bracknell identifies him as her sister’s son and Algernon’s older brother.
  6. Jack finds his father’s names in a military directory, confirms his own name as Ernest, and embraces Gwendolen as other couples embrace.

Cosa notare

Gwendolen openly values a pleasing explanation over an honest one. This helps explain why both women accept the men’s excuses despite their doubts.
