A chi è rivolto

Readers who enjoy clever puzzles in gaslit drawing rooms, warm and quick heroines, old houses with secrets, and short mysteries that each close in one sitting will find this collection a delight.

Che cos’è questo libro

What if the cleverest detective in New York spent her evenings at the opera, chatting about hats and partners? Violet Strange does exactly that. She is a small, dimpled debutante and the daughter of a wealthy financier. Nobody at the ball suspects that she takes secret commissions from a private agency.

The Golden Slipper, and Other Problems for Violet Strange gathers nine of her cases. Anna Katharine Green wrote them early in the twentieth century, when she was already one of the first American writers of detective fiction. Violet answers each plain question by reading people as closely as she reads clues, and one puzzle belongs to her alone: why does a girl with every comfort work for money?

A society girl takes secret work as detective

The book opens at the opera, where one gentleman points out a young woman in a box and calls her his agent. She is Violet Strange, small and quick, with a comic face and a very rich father. Tonight a widower named Driscoll needs her, because slander is starting to touch his daughter Alicia.

Alicia belongs to five close friends who call themselves the Inseparables. Wherever they go, jewels and lace go missing and later come back by strange routes. People now say openly that Alicia is the thief.

Violet joins a house party on the Hudson. She chatters like a careless child and tosses a sapphire pendant on a dresser beside an open window as bait. Then she studies the lights along the balcony and notices that one room stays dark. In the morning she plays a spoiled girl who has lost her jewel, and a small clue brings the truth into the room. A cheerful face can hide a sharp mind.

That’s 1 of 10 key points.

Questions about La scarpetta d'oro e altri casi di Violet Strange

What is The Golden Slipper and Other Problems for Violet Strange about?

It is a collection of nine detective stories in which a young society woman, Violet Strange, secretly solves puzzles of theft, murder, and lost papers for a private agency, while also keeping a personal secret from her father.

Who is Violet Strange?

Violet is the small, lively daughter of a wealthy New Yorker, Peter Strange. She goes to balls and teas, yet takes secret cases for money, using her charm and sharp observation to learn what police cannot.

Do the nine problems have to be read in order?

Each problem is a complete story with its own puzzle, so you can start almost anywhere. Reading in order lets you follow Violet's growing confidence, her brother Arthur's help, and her friendship with Roger Upjohn.

Is the book easy to read?

Yes, in the sense that matters: each problem is short, with clear scenes, lively dialogue, and a single question to answer. You can enjoy one tale in a sitting and carry on whenever you like.

What is the main message of the stories?

They show that close observation and kindness solve more than force does. Violet reads small details and human feelings, and she often shows mercy, so justice and compassion work together.
