This book suits readers who like short tales built around one bold idea, from quiet longing to a world under a blazing star. It rewards anyone who enjoys strange dreams and early science fiction.
Che cos’è questo libro
A boy of five wanders into a London street, sees a green door in a white wall, and steps through into a garden where panthers play. Years later he still longs to go back. What would it cost you to turn away from such a door?
That is the first of eight tales by H. G. Wells, who takes one impossible thing and treats it as real. A star rushes at the earth, a solicitor lives a second life in his dreams, and a mountaineer falls into a valley where no one can see. You hear the turns of each tale, never the endings.

A childhood door leads into a lost garden
The title story is told by Redmond, who repeats a confidence from his old school friend, Lionel Wallace. Wallace is a successful politician, close to a seat in the Cabinet, yet something in his life has gone dim. He says he is haunted by a beauty he glimpsed once and longs to find again.
It begins when he is about five. He slips away from home in West Kensington and sees a white wall hung with crimson creeper, and in it a green door. He feels drawn to it and warned away from it at once. He walks past, then runs back and plunges through.
Inside is a garden with marble-edged flower beds. Two spotted panthers play with a ball, and one rubs its soft ear against his hand. A tall fair girl lifts him up and kisses him. It feels like coming home. A grave woman opens a book whose pages show his own life as living scenes. When he begs for one more page, it shows him sobbing in a grey London street. A policeman marches him home.
The door comes back at school and again in his busy career, always at an awkward moment. Each time something urgent seems to matter more. What you most long for rarely waits while you finish your errands.
That’s 1 of 8 key points.

Questions about La porta nel muro e altri racconti
What is The Door in the Wall and Other Stories about?
It gathers eight short tales by H. G. Wells. They include a man haunted by a lost garden, a star that threatens the earth, a dream of war, a jealous ironmaster, a diamond maker, a worshipped dynamo and a valley of blind people.
What does the green door mean in The Door in the Wall?
The door stands for a chance at deep happiness that Lionel Wallace glimpses as a child and keeps meeting later. Whether it is real or imagined is left to the reader, which is why it stays in the mind.
What is the proverb in The Country of the Blind?
The proverb makes a man with sight in one eye the ruler of a land where everyone else is blind. Nunez trusts it when he finds a valley of blind people, and the story tests whether having sight can really make a man a ruler.
Are these stories easy to read?
Yes, in the sense that each tale is short and has a clear shape. They open in everyday places such as a dinner table or a train carriage, and the strange element arrives gradually, so you can follow every scene easily.
Are the stories science fiction?
Several are. The Star, A Dream of Armageddon and The Diamond Maker use science and invention. Others, like The Door in the Wall and A Moonlight Fable, read more like fantasy or fable. Together they show Wells's range.
