The Brothers Karamazov, Chapter 8: riassunto

Chapter 8 di 96 · Part 1 · 14 min per leggere: chapter

In Chapter 8, Fyodor Pavlovitch returns to the monastery meal and wrecks Miüsov’s attempt to restore good relations by insulting the monks and making false accusations. He demands that Alyosha leave the monastery, then departs with Ivan, whose anger turns their journey home into a largely silent confrontation.

Cosa succede

  1. Miüsov resolves to abandon his lawsuit against the monastery and apologizes to the Father Superior for Fyodor Pavlovitch’s absence.
  2. Fyodor Pavlovitch returns as grace ends, determined to answer his own disgrace by humiliating everyone else.
  3. He mocks Maximov, attacks the monks’ religious practices and comfortable table, and repeats accusations the narrator identifies as false.
  4. The Father Superior answers calmly, while Miüsov leaves with Kalganov and Fyodor Pavlovitch demands Alyosha’s return home.
  5. Maximov tries to join the departing carriage, but Ivan punches him away and orders the coachman to drive.
  6. During the journey, Ivan rebukes his father, who repeats his intention to remove Alyosha from the monastery.
