A chi è rivolto

This book suits readers who love dragons, magic swords and hidden treasure, and anyone curious about the old German epic behind so many later tales. It fits families who enjoy stories read aloud.

Che cos’è questo libro

Picture a boy so strong that when he swings the heaviest hammer in the smithy, the anvil splinters into pieces. Picture the same boy catching a living bear and leading it into a frightened dwarf's workshop just for fun. That boy is Siegfried, and his story begins in a strong castle near the river Rhine.

Mary Macgregor wrote Stories of Siegfried, Told to the Children as a retelling, for young readers, of part of the old German poem called the Nibelungenlied. In fifteen short chapters, you get a dragon, a magic sword, an invisible cloak, a hoard of gold that never shrinks, and a quiet tale of love and pride undone by a secret spoken at the wrong moment.

A strong prince grows up in a dwarf's forge

Siegfried is born a prince, the son of King Siegmund and Queen Sieglinde. They live in a strong castle near the Rhine. Everyone at court loves the boy.

When armed men enter the land, the little prince is sent away for safety. He is hidden in a great forest in the care of a blacksmith named Mimer. Mimer is a dwarf, one of the Nibelungs, a small race of smiths who hammer all day and dance all night.

Siegfried is no quiet pupil. He grabs the heaviest hammer and strikes so hard that the anvil splinters. Mimer scolds him, but the boy only laughs.

One day he decides to pay Mimer back. He blows his silver horn, and a great shaggy bear looks out from a bush. The boy seizes the beast, muzzles it, and leads it to the smithy. Mimer drops his sword and runs to hide. Siegfried makes the bear chase the little dwarf from corner to corner.

The author does not hide that this is naughty. Strength without kindness is only a boy's game, and Siegfried still has much to learn.

That’s 1 of 9 key points.
