Che cos’è questo libro

Imagine a girl of thirteen, tricked into a sedan chair by her own great-uncle and sold for thirty taels of silver. Imagine another, drugged on a river boat, passed from hand to hand, and finally buried in a public graveyard. These are the first blows of Snow, Moon, and Plum Blossom, a Chinese novel in fifty chapters by Chen Lang, who dated his preface 1775.

The story is set in the 1550s, when Japanese raiders and Chinese sea bandits burned the coast. Chen Lang wrote to encourage kindness and warn against cruelty, and he lets dreams, ghosts and immortals carry the lesson. You get a family saga, an adventure of friendship and a war story in one, following Cen Xiu, his cousin Little Plum and a girl called Snow.

A scholar flees with his mother

The novel opens with Cen Xiu, a young scholar of seventeen from Nanjing. He loves the sword and the bow as much as his books. He tells himself that a real man must be both a writer and a fighter. His father is dead, so he lives with his mother and an old servant couple.

Trouble comes from his grandfather's past. The old man once caught a magistrate named Hou Zijie taking bribes, and Hou kept his grudge for years. Now Hou returns as inspector of the whole region and spreads a story of an unpaid debt. Cen Xiu's teacher sends a secret warning and advises him to travel until the inspector's term ends.

Cen Xiu proposes going to his mother's brother in Shandong, and he calms his mother's fears. The old servant agrees that running is wiser than fighting an official. They file the leave request, hire a boat and go.

Wise retreat from a powerful enemy protects the people you love.

That’s 1 of 10 key points.
