A lost doctor tumbles into a cabin
Donald MacDonald is a children's doctor from Boston, built like the football fullback he once was. On a summer hunting trip, he admits to his dog Mike that they are lost. The sun is sinking behind the western ridge.
He climbs toward a clearing and a weathered cabin. A pack of gaunt dogs rushes him, and he backs toward the door. The latch gives way, and man and dog fall inside together. A kettle of stew clatters to the floor.
By the fireplace stands a girl of about fifteen, holding one burned foot in her hands. Her eyes are full of tears, but then she laughs at how funny he looked, rolling over the dog. Donald salves and bandages the burn, and she invites him to supper without a thought of payment. Mike, who bristles at strangers, licks her bare foot at once. A clumsy fall through a cabin door starts a bond that will last for years.
That’s 1 of 11 key points.
