A skeptical lawyer meets a poacher's death

The story opens in November 1788 in Gavrillac, a village in Brittany. Andre-Louis Moreau is twenty-four, a lawyer, and the godson of the local lord, Quintin de Kercadiou. He has read everything from Thucydides to Rousseau and has settled on one firm belief, that people are mad.

His closest friend is Philippe de Vilmorin, a gentle seminary student who believes the world can be remade. Philippe brings news that a peasant named Mabey has been shot dead for taking a pheasant. The gamekeeper acted on orders from the Marquis de La Tour d'Azyr, the greatest nobleman in the region. Philippe wants justice for the widow.

Andre-Louis answers with cool arguments. A new ruling class of merchants would be no kinder than the old one, he says, and human nature does not change.

A mind that mocks every cause must still answer when injustice comes close to home.

That’s 1 of 10 key points.

Questions about Scaramouche

What is Scaramouche about?

It follows Andre-Louis Moreau, a young Breton lawyer, who vows vengeance when a nobleman kills his friend. He becomes a revolutionary orator, an actor, a fencing master and a deputy during the French Revolution.

Why is the hero called Scaramouche?

Scaramouche is a stock character of Italian street comedy, a quick-witted trickster. Andre-Louis takes the name while hiding among strolling players, and it suits his habit of stirring up trouble and slipping away.

Is Scaramouche a true story?

No. Andre-Louis and his enemies are invented. Sabatini set them among real events and people of 1789 to 1792, such as the fall of the Bastille, the Assembly, Danton and Le Chapelier.

Is Scaramouche easy to read?

It is a lively adventure with short chapters, brisk dialogue and plenty of humour. Duels, disguises and theatre scenes keep the story moving, and the Revolution is explained as the plot goes along.

What is the main message of Scaramouche?

The book shows how stubborn privilege pushes ordinary people toward revolution, and how words can be as strong as swords. It also suggests that a person's worth lies in what he does, not in his birth.
