Romeo and Juliet for GCSE English Literature

By the Library of Alexandria · 4 minute read · Updated 24 Ott 2026

In short

  • Romeo and Juliet is a tragedy in five acts by William Shakespeare, written in the mid 1590s and first printed in the following years.
  • The setting is Verona, where the Montagues and the Capulets hate each other for reasons no one explains.
  • The story follows two teenagers who meet at a feast and fall in love in a single night.
  • Their secret romance unfolds over a few days and collides with the violence of the feud.

The plot in six lines

A street fight brings Prince Escalus's warning against further violence, while Romeo longs for Rosaline and Juliet's family considers Paris as her future husband.

Romeo goes to the Capulet feast hoping to see Rosaline, but he and Juliet fall in love before learning that their families are enemies.

That night, Romeo and Juliet exchange vows, and Friar Laurence marries them secretly the next afternoon, hoping their marriage will end the feud.

Tybalt seeks a fight with Romeo, Mercutio fights in Romeo's place, and Romeo then kills Tybalt in fury and is banished.

After parting from Romeo, Juliet faces marriage to Paris and accepts Friar Laurence's potion plan, but news of her apparent death misleads Romeo.

Romeo kills Paris at Juliet's tomb and drinks poison beside her, then Juliet wakes and takes her own life, leaving their families to end the feud and promise to honour them.

Themes

Love and hatred: Romeo and Juliet's love crosses family boundaries, while the feud turns their shared city into a place of danger.

Fate and choice: The Chorus predicts death, but the characters' choices and chance events leave readers questioning what shapes the lovers' end.

Haste: The lovers meet, marry and part within days, while rushed decisions leave little time to question dangerous plans.

Adult responsibility: The adults shape the lovers' choices through family demands, secret plans and failures to protect them from the feud.

Violence and pride: Street quarrels and Tybalt's anger show how wounded pride feeds violence and threatens everyone around the lovers.
