Chapter 18 di 32 · 7 min per leggere: chapter
In Chapter 18, Pollyanna struggles to cheer John Pendleton and connect him with Aunt Polly, but sunlight through glass creates an opening for a happier visit. Pendleton hangs prisms for her enjoyment, finally hears the whole glad game story, and responds with tears and a comparison that Pollyanna takes literally.
Cosa succede
- Pollyanna visits John Pendleton often, but his pain and abrupt changes of subject keep her from explaining the glad game.
- Pollyanna believes Pendleton once loves Aunt Polly, while her aunt refuses discussions of him and Dr. Chilton.
- During an early visit, Pollyanna delights in rainbow colors cast across Pendleton’s pillow by a glass thermometer.
- Pendleton asks Nora to prepare a window string, then has Pollyanna hang twelve prisms taken from a candlestick.
- The scattered colors prompt Pollyanna to explain the glad game, and Pendleton calls her the finest prism with tears in his eyes.

Cosa notare
Pendleton compares Pollyanna’s effect on people to the prisms’ effect on sunlight. Her literal reply misses the emotional meaning behind his tears.
