A Herculean task

A Herculean task is a job that takes extraordinary strength, effort, or determination; the phrase comes from the story of Hercules and his twelve labours. Today it can describe mental work or a large practical job, not just a feat of physical strength.

Where it comes from

The labours of Hercules

Hercules, called Heracles in Greek stories, must complete a series of dangerous labours for King Eurystheus. These demand strength, courage, and sometimes clever planning.

In The Library, Heracles cannot pierce the Nemean lion's skin with his weapons. He overcomes the animal by wrestling it and choking it with his arms.

An enormous job today

Today the phrase describes work whose scale or difficulty seems overwhelming. It need not involve muscles: sorting a huge archive or organising disaster relief could be a Herculean task.

In The Library, Heracles must clear the cattle dung from Augeas's yard in a single day. He channels rivers through it, tackling a vast job through ingenuity rather than shovelling.

How to use A Herculean task

  1. Choose a task that demands exceptional effort.
  2. Explain what makes the job so difficult.
  3. Use the phrase sparingly for ordinary chores.

Does a Herculean task mean an impossible task?

No, a Herculean task is extremely difficult, but not necessarily impossible. Hercules completes his famous labours, so the phrase often suggests that success is possible with unusual effort, endurance, or ingenuity. It describes the challenge rather than predicting failure.

Should Herculean have a capital H?

Both Herculean and herculean are accepted, though a capital H makes the link to Hercules clearer. Some dictionaries and publishers prefer the lowercase form for the everyday meaning of exceptionally demanding. Follow the spelling style used in the rest of the piece.
