Persuasion, Chapter 4: riassunto

Chapter 4 di 24 · 8 min per leggere: chapter

In Chapter 4, Anne Elliot recalls accepting Captain Frederick Wentworth and then ending their engagement under Lady Russell’s influence, a decision that leaves her deeply unhappy. At twenty-seven, she believes keeping her promise would have brought greater happiness, while the prospect of his sister living nearby revives her distress.

Cosa succede

  1. Captain Frederick Wentworth comes to Somersetshire in 1806, meets Anne Elliot, and wins her acceptance of his marriage proposal.
  2. Sir Walter disapproves, while Lady Russell persuades Anne that Wentworth’s uncertain prospects make the engagement unwise.
  3. Anne ends the engagement partly for his supposed benefit, but Wentworth feels wronged and leaves the country.
  4. Anne’s sorrow lasts, and she rejects Charles Musgrove when she is about twenty-two.
  5. At twenty-seven, Anne questions the advice she followed and believes Wentworth’s career has justified his confidence.
  6. The Crofts’ possible arrival revives her pain, though she hopes their ignorance of the engagement prevents awkwardness.
