Chapter 3 di 68 · Book 1: The Cup and the Lip · 23 min per leggere: chapter

In Chapter 3, Mortimer Lightwood and Eugene Wrayburn examine the recovered body, while a distressed stranger gives his name as Julius Handford and attracts police attention. Liz supports Charley’s secret education, and an inquest identifies the dead man as John Harmon but leaves the cause and responsibility unresolved, prompting a reward without a solution.

Cosa succede

  1. Charley brings Mortimer news of the body, and Eugene joins their journey to Jesse Hexam’s riverside home.
  2. Hexam shows notices of recovered bodies, then an anxious stranger arrives and accompanies the men to the police station.
  3. The stranger denies recognizing the corpse, gives the name Julius Handford, and attracts the Night-Inspector’s investigation.
  4. At home, Liz encourages Charley’s secret schooling while describing her loyalty to their father and her hopes for her brother.
  5. The inquest hears evidence identifying John Harmon and reporting that he carries more than seven hundred pounds when leaving his ship.
  6. The jury finds suspicious circumstances; a reward follows, but the investigation produces no solution and public attention fades.
