Oscar Wilde on death

Questa pagina si basa sui nostri riassunti dei libri. Non è scritta da Oscar Wilde.

Oscar Wilde treated death in his fairy tales as a sorrowful test of what made a life valuable. The Swallow’s death in The Happy Prince gave lasting weight to his acts of kindness, while the town’s admiration for outward splendour proved shallow. Wilde did not make that loss painless: generosity had a real cost. Yet the tale’s ending suggested that death did not erase the worth of compassion, even when people failed to recognise it.

Service carried a real cost

The Swallow stayed behind while the other birds left for Egypt. His errands brought help to people suffering from hunger and cold. Wilde made his eventual death follow practical acts of mercy, rather than fine speeches about being generous.

Public judgment missed true worth

After the Swallow died and the Prince’s heart broke, the council had the shabby statue melted down. Its response exposed a narrow measure of value: once the beautiful surface disappeared, the townspeople no longer recognised anything worth preserving.

The ending honoured the overlooked

The Prince’s broken heart resisted the furnace. When God asked an angel to bring the city’s most precious things, the angel brought that heart and the dead bird. Within the tale, this recognition reversed the council’s judgment without undoing the sorrow.
