In Canto 33, Bradamante studies Merlin’s prophetic pictures and defeats three knights again, while Gradasso breaks his agreement with Rinaldo and sails away with Baiardo. Astolfo reaches Senapo’s wealthy kingdom, learns how divine punishment leaves its ruler blind and hungry, and uses his horn to chase the harpies into a cavern leading toward hell.
Cosa succede
- The fortress lord explains Merlin’s paintings, which predict French campaigns in Italy, their victories, disasters, and shifting fortunes.
- Bradamante dreams that Ruggiero remains faithful, wakes in grief, and unhorses three challengers who then renounce armor and riding.
- A monstrous bird attacks Baiardo and interrupts Rinaldo’s duel with Gradasso, who finds the horse but refuses to return him.
- Gradasso sails from Arles with Baiardo and Durindana, while Rinaldo returns to camp without his horse.
- Astolfo flies to Senapo’s court, where harpies repeatedly steal and foul the blind ruler’s food.
- After his sword proves useless, Astolfo sounds his horn and pursues the fleeing harpies to an entrance to hell.
