Chapter 19 of 52 · 18 min to read the chapter

In Chapter 19, Margaret prepares for the Thorntons’ dinner while visits to Bessy reveal the hunger and distress surrounding the strike. Mrs. Hale’s improvement encourages hope, but Thornton’s knowledge of her illness troubles Margaret, and John Boucher’s desperate account of his family moves her to give money.

What happens

  1. Mrs. Hale enjoys planning Margaret’s party clothes, while Bessy connects Margaret’s white dress with a comforting dream.
  2. Bessy describes workers’ hunger, and Nicholas Higgins confidently predicts that urgent contracts force the masters to grant five percent.
  3. Mrs. Hale improves under treatment, but Margaret resents Thornton’s economic arguments and his knowledge of her mother’s danger.
  4. Before the dinner, Margaret hears John Boucher describe his hungry children and sick wife, blaming both employers and the Union.
  5. Higgins offers practical help while defending the Union, and Margaret gives Bessy all the money she can call her own.
  6. Exhausted Bessy thanks Margaret, defends her neighbors’ willingness to help, and speaks of approaching death.
