Chapter 1 of 52 · 17 min to read the chapter

In Chapter 1, Margaret helps at a farewell dinner for her cousin Edith, whose approaching marriage also marks the end of Margaret’s life in Harley Street. Her conversation with Henry Lennox reveals her weariness with elaborate wedding preparations and her affection for Helstone, while Captain Lennox’s arrival interrupts the evening and the wedding follows amid bustle.

What happens

  1. While Edith sleeps, Margaret anticipates returning to her parents and overhears Mrs. Shaw discussing marriage and expensive wedding clothes.
  2. Sent upstairs for shawls, Margaret remembers her painful childhood arrival and feels affection for the nursery she must leave.
  3. Margaret models the shawls, and Henry Lennox arrives to join the gathering.
  4. Margaret and Henry discuss simpler weddings, her love for Helstone, and his wish to visit her there.
  5. Captain Lennox arrives during Edith’s performance, and she abandons the piano to greet him.
  6. After the guests leave, the family gathers for tea, and preparations continue until the wedding is over.

What to notice

Margaret’s attachment to Helstone exceeds what she can explain to Henry. Her response distinguishes personal belonging from his teasing requests for a picturesque description.
