Norse Mythology, Part 1: The Creation and Preservation of the World, Chapter 1: riassunto

Part 1: The Creation and Preservation of the World, Chapter 1 di 19 · 16 min per leggere: chapter

In Chapter 1, heat and frost give rise to Ymer, whose body Odin, Vile, and Ve use to build the world after killing him. The account explains the origins of gods, humans, heavenly movements, and natural forces, then describes divine homes and the arrangement of nine worlds.

Cosa succede

  1. Heat from Muspelheim meets frozen vapor from Niflheim in Ginungagap, producing Ymer, the ancestor of frost-giants.
  2. Audhumbla feeds Ymer and uncovers Bure from salty stones; Bure’s descendants include Odin, Vile, and Ve.
  3. Bor’s sons kill Ymer, drown most frost-giants in his blood, and fashion earth and heaven from his body.
  4. The gods arrange heavenly lights, establish measures of time, and build Bifrost between earth and heaven.
  5. The gods build their halls, give dwarfs human form, and create Ask and Embla from trees.
  6. The account describes divine dwellings, different supernatural beings, and nine worlds arranged above and below the human realm.
