Aphrodite
Aphrodite is the Greek goddess of love, beauty, and sexual desire. Her stories show how attraction can overcome good judgment, unsettle marriages, and draw even gods into conflict. Known to the Romans as Venus, she also protects lovers and her son Aeneas.
Key stories of Aphrodite
Birth from the sea
In the most common version, Aphrodite rises from sea foam after the wounded sky god Uranus falls victim to Cronus. Her arrival connects beauty and desire with the sea.
In Theogony, Hesiod describes Aphrodite forming in the foam and reaching Cyprus, where grass grows beneath her feet.
In Theogony by Hesiod
Paris and Helen
Aphrodite wins Paris's judgment in a beauty contest against Hera and Athena by promising him Helen. This choice helps set the Trojan War in motion.
In The Iliad, Aphrodite rescues Paris from his duel with Menelaus and carries him to his bedroom. She then pressures Helen to go to him.
In The Iliad by Homer
The trap of Hephaestus
Aphrodite has an affair with Ares while married to Hephaestus. Her husband catches the lovers in an invisible net and calls the other gods to witness their humiliation.
In The Odyssey, the singer Demodocus entertains the Phaeacians with the story of the trapped lovers and the gods who gather to laugh at them.

Are Aphrodite and Venus the same goddess?
Venus is the Roman goddess identified with the Greek Aphrodite. Their stories often overlap, but Venus also has a special place as an ancestor and protector of Rome. In The Aeneid, she repeatedly helps her son Aeneas survive danger and pursue his destined journey.
Is Aphrodite the daughter of Zeus?
In some traditions, Aphrodite is the daughter of Zeus and Dione, but in the most common version she is born from sea foam. The Iliad presents Dione as her mother, while Theogony tells the sea-birth story. Greek myths often preserve different accounts of a god's origins.
