You will enjoy this book if you like stories of women breaking into men's professions, a sequel that talks back to a famous play, or the suffrage struggle.
Che cos’è questo libro
In 1901 a Cambridge mathematician walks into a shop in Cornhill and buys a man's suit. She tells the assistant it is for a seafaring brother. Her real plan is to become a barrister, and the law will not admit a woman.
Mrs. Warren's Daughter was written by Harry Johnston, an explorer, painter and novelist. It carries on from Bernard Shaw's play Mrs. Warren's Profession, with Shaw's permission. The heroine is Vivie Warren, clever daughter of a woman who ran disreputable hotels. You get a comedy of disguise, a courtroom, a love that duty forbids, and women who risk prison for the vote.

Punto chiave 1 di 10
Vivie and Norie run a women's firm
The story opens in June 1900, in an office on Chancery Lane. Vivie Warren, about twenty-five, sits among tin boxes of clients' papers. This is the firm of Fraser and Warren, actuaries and accountants. Her partner is Honoria Fraser, whom she calls Norie. Both are Cambridge mathematicians, and they advise women about money, property and law.
A letter from Captain Frank Gardner begs her to marry him and settle in Rhodesia. Vivie cables a refusal. She wants work, a cause, and revenge on men.
The firm is a clever workaround. No professional body admits women, but no law stops women from consulting them. Vivie is also reading law in secret, with a place at the Bar in mind. Under the business runs an old wound. Her mother's trade became known, and respectable friends dropped her.
Vivie's ambition begins as an answer to shame, and the firm gives it its first foothold.
That’s 1 of 10 key points.

Questions about La figlia della signora Warren: storia del movimento femminile
What is Mrs. Warren's Daughter about?
It follows Vivie Warren, the daughter in Bernard Shaw's play, from 1900 through the war, with an epilogue imagining 1919. She disguises herself as a man to become a barrister, then joins the suffragette fight. Her love for a married scientist and the First World War shape her life.
Do I need to read Mrs. Warren's Profession first?
No. The author says you need not have read Shaw's play. The early chapters recall what matters about Vivie's mother, her hotels and Vivie's break with her, so the story stands alone.
Who is David Vavasour Williams?
He is the name Vivie takes when she dresses as a man. The name belongs to a real young Welshman she heard of from Frank Gardner, and she borrows it to pass the Bar and win a Welsh vicar's trust.
Is Mrs. Warren's Daughter a true story?
It is fiction, a sequel to a play by Bernard Shaw, written in 1920. But it uses real events such as Black Friday in 1910, the 1913 Derby and the German occupation of Belgium, and names real suffragettes.
Is Mrs. Warren's Daughter easy to read?
Its mix of play-style dialogue, letters and a chatty narrator makes it lively. The scenes are vivid, the humour is frequent, and many chapters can be enjoyed on their own.
